5th class Qualify for Trócaire Game Changers Final

4th Jun 2025
5th class has been busy learning about global justice issues. We had a thoroughly engaging and insightful workshop with Niall from Trócaire who brought us on a journey from Somalia to Guatemala to Palestine, exploring a range of global justice issues.
We were then given the challenge of creating a board game to teach other people about these important issues. The children as always showed their ingenuity and creativity and came up with wonderful games about climate change, the Sustainable Development Goals food injustice, water injustice and peace and justice in the Occupied Territories of Palestine.
We also had great fun testing out and playing each other's board games.
After Easter, we received the amazing news that one of the games - Safe Haven - was chosen as one of only 20 games from 209 entries to be chosen for the grand final!!! That any of the games was chosen was a wonderful recognition of the truly collaborative nature of the project.
The game creators of Safe Haven travelled to DCU to present their game to the other finalists and their teachers. Conor, Sophie, Lilly-May and Gráinne did a super job explaining their game which focused on internally displaced refugees in Palestine making their journey to safety.
They even met with past pupil and TD Rory Hearne who said he would bring their concerns about Gaza to the Taoiseach in the Dáil.
Holly and Tom also represented 5th class so well and were a credit to the school!
We are all so proud of all of 5th class for their efforts. Mr.O'Mahoney and the whole school community came together at last week's assembly to celebrate this wonderful achievement and presented the winning game creators,  Shane, Conor, Lilly-May, Sophie and Gráinne with certificates of recognition.
They spoke about their experience and shared a very important message that 'everyone can make a difference'. Well done to all involved.
