Athletics:

Glór na Mara has enjoyed great success in recent years competing in athletics at a local and county level, which is a great reward for the dedication shown by all involved. Children from 1st to 6th classes train on a weekly basis during the spring months and enjoy representing their school in the local competitions.

Basketball:

Basketball is open to both boys and girls in 5th and 6th class. Every year there is a basketball blitz with many schools in Waterford competing. The boys and girls in Glór na Mara show great interest in training and their commitment is outstanding when playing in competitions. In 2019 the boys’ team won the Waterford Schools Basketball Blitz. We look forward to many more years of basketball success in Glór na Mara.

GAA:

Glór na Mara actively promotes the participation in our national games. Gaelic football and Ladies football are played from 3rd class to 6th class and our school teams train twice weekly from September to December. They also compete strongly in the Cumann na mBunscol competitions. This year our U-13 Gaelic team won the Eastern Final and progressed to the County Final. This was a great achievement, and a great day was had by teachers, parents and supporters alike.
Hurling and Camógie are very popular in our school and our coaching begins in January. Coaching and fun blitzes are held for 1st and 2nd classes every Monday in Stella Maris Hockey Pitch from 2:30pm – 3:30pm. 3rd to 6th class training takes place every Thursday in Tramore GAA pitch at 2:45pm – 3:45pm. The training involves the development of the skills of the games and the emphasis is on the enjoyment and participation of all children. Glór na Mara participates in all Cumann na mBunscol competitions. This year our indoor hurling team won the Eastern Final and our camógie team emerged from their qualifying blitz to reach the Eastern Final where they competed strongly.
Helmets and hurleys are provided at all coaching sessions for children and hurleys can be purchased from the school. Beginners are very welcome, so come along and enjoy the fastest field sport in the world!

Tag Rugby:

In recent years Glór na Mara have taken part in the Tag Rugby blitz held in Waterford City. Schools throughout Waterford city and county take part and in 2010 we achieved huge success when brought the trophy back to Glór na Mara!

Tennis:

We take part in the Munster Tennis Primary Schools Competition. There are competitions for boys, girls and mixed teams. The matches usually take place in April, May and June and are enjoyed by all.

Soccer:

Girls and boys also take part in soccer leagues in the county. The classes involved are 3rd to 6th and they enjoy playing both indoor and outdoor soccer.

The tournaments/leagues that we enter are as follows:

The SPAR FAI 5-a-side. This national tournament is run off in a blitz format.

The Willie Moran Memorial 7-a-side. This local tournament is run off in a blitz format.

The Jack Kennedy Memorial Cup. This 11-a-side local tournament is knock out.

Soccer coaching and matches happen after the Easter holidays in May and June.

Swimming:

Every year, all classes from 1st – 6th attend swimming lessons in Splashworld, Tramore as part of the Aquatics strand of the PE curriculum.

We had up to 10 pupils from the school taking part in the Munster Schools Swimming Gala in February 2023. A number of these advanced to the National Primary Schools' Swim Competition at the National Aquatic Centre in March 2023. As always, the children's behaviour was exemplary and they represented their school, their families and themselves with distinction and pride.

We have 4 swimmers representing the school in the Munster Minor Schools gala on October 15th 2023.
