Glór na Mara Celebrates the Languages and Cultures of our School
Our 5th and 6th classes have been taking
part in Spanish Language classes as part of the Say Yes to Languages Programme. They have also been learning about other cultures and languages. As part of this programme, they created culture boxes to celebrate the range of languages and cultures present here in Glór na Mara. All classes and teachers were invited to take a passport and visit the beautiful languages and cultures of our school community.
Each culture box is a snapshot into a country, its people, places and language. In many cases they represent home, home away from
home or the words spoken so proudly by our parents or grandparents. As the Irish proverb says, “ Tír gan teanga, tír gan anam” - A country without a language, is a country without a soul.
As part of the programme, our School Council conducted a survey throughout the school to find out what countries our students and
their parents are from and also what languages they speak at home. We discovered that here in Glór na Mara, there are more than 35 different nationalities as well as over 25 different languages spoken by our students and their parents.
Our survey showed us that we have so many different cultures in our school. There is no doubt but that the one thing we all have in
common is that we are all different and we all belong here in Glór na Mara.
In the words of Bad Bunny at this years Super
Bowl, “The only thing more powerful than hate is love.”
Well done to all involved!👏
